AN INTRODUCTION TO BEE KEEPING

If you are interested in discovering what beekeeping is all about, perhaps to take it up as a hobby, or simply want to know more about honey bees and beekeeping then this course is for you.

The next one-day course will be on:
SATURDAY 10 APRIL, 2010
- COURSE FULL
and
SATURDAY 15th MAY, 2010
and

SATURDAY 26th JUNE 2010

The courses will be held at TWIGS (Therapeutic Work in Gardening, Swindon), Manor Garden Centre, Cheney Manor Industrial Estate, SN2 2QJ

The aim of the course is to provide attendees with a good understanding of:

- what a honey bee colony is,
- that a beekeeper is only a guardian of honey bee colonies and involves responsibilities,
- what it is like to inspect a hive, and
- what is involved in taking up beekeeping.

Each course will last from 10am to 4 pm and will consist of five main sessions:

- What are honey bees?
- What does a beekeeper do?
- Hands-on with the beekeeper inspecting hives (subject to the weather)
- Honey and its extraction
- Progressing to starting beekeeping.

Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions at all times.
If attendees do not wish to participate directly with the hive inspections they can observe the hive inspections from behind a window in the apiary shed.

Attendees should bring:
Notebook and pens (plus reading glasses if needed to be able to see honey bee eggs), a packed lunch, and for the hive inspection session bring a pair of ‘marigold’ gloves, wellies and wear light-coloured trousers with no bare midriff please.

The organisers will provide:
Tea & coffee, and bee tops to wear for the hive inspection. You will also be provided with a copy of the course slides plus useful information for discovering more about beekeeping.

Please avoid arriving late, especially if travelling some distance. The organisers will be setting up from about 9.30am.

The course leader will be Ross Gregory, Training Officer, Swindon BKA.

The charge for the one-day course is £30.
This fee includes Associate Membership of S&DBKA until the end of October, 2010.
