Asian Hornet Week

10th - 16 September 2018

The British Beekeeper’s Association has designated the week 10 to 16 September as Asian Hornet Week. This insect is a threat to many pollinators but becomes a serious threat to honey bees at this time of year when it seeks protein to feed its young.
Beekeepers are being asked to observe their hives for up to an hour as often as possible during the week. However the hornet is just at home in urban areas as rural so anyone could spot one. It is about an inch long (25mm) with a mainly black abdomen, which has one yellow band towards the rear. It has characteristic yellow legs and an orange face with two brownish red compound eyes.
To confirm the identity and find out what to do if you spot one visit: https://www.bbka.org.uk/asian-hornet-week.

Welcome to the web site of the Wiltshire Beekeepers Association (WBKA). The WBKA is a member club of the British Beekeepers association. The WBKA represents and organises events and education for beekeepers in Wiltshire.
